Protected Geographical Indication 2012
The origins of this grape variety are unclear: according to some scholars it has its roots in the Middle East, according to others it is the result of a spontaneous cross between a pre-domesticated vine and a grape variety from Illyria. Nonetheless, it has its roots in Burgundy, originally cultivated by the Cistercian monks of the Pontigny Abbey, from where, since the late nineteenth century, it gradually spread throughout the world.
